Cellist, Denver Philharmonic Orchestra
Piano and Cello Instructor
Growing up in Alabama, Sarah spent many hours practicing on her mom's old upright piano, and enjoyed giving living room cello concerts to an audience of semi-attentive siblings.
As a cello student of Veneta Billmayer, she was encouraged to audition, compete, and attend music festivals. From there, she began pursuing progressively more notable musical ambitions, including several state cello titles, concerto performances with local symphonies, and a composer-in-residence position with an orchestra. She is also an accomplished pianist who earned recognition at the local, state, and regional levels from an early age.
Sarah studied cello with Linc Smelser at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. While earning a Master of Arts in Teaching, she began teaching private music lessons at a local studio where she developed instructional techniques based on developmental psychology and educational philosophy.
Now, Sarah is a seasoned teacher with nearly a decade of experience. She provides personalized instruction balancing theory, technique, and performance skills, and enjoys working with both beginners and experienced music students. Her studio currently serves nearly 50 students of all ages, and she has a particular knack for teaching older beginners and adults. When she is not teaching, she is performing with the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, playing for private events, trying out a new recipe, or hiking in the mountains.
